Do You Need an Audiologist?
What’s the difference between an Audiologist and a hearing aid dispenser? The short answer – specialized training. Audiologists are trained in colleges and universities, have a minimum of a Master’s degree in Audiology, complete a supervised clinical year, pass a national exam, and complete continuing education every 2 years. An Audiologist should be your first choice when it comes to your hearing health care. Their knowledge goes beyond the “selling” of a hearing aid. They have studied years to become the gatekeeper to the non medical management of hearing and hearing related disorders. Audiologists also work closely with ENT physicians to accurately evaulate and treat hearing loss, whether it be surgery or amplification.
Hearing aids are medical devices, not just a commodity, and with proper counseling and aural rehabilitation will improve the quality of your life through better hearing. The training involved in obtaining that level of expertise makes the Audiolgist the best choice in providing comprehensive care and clinical understanding of your hearing loss. Karla McKenzie, our state-licensed Audiologist, has years of experience treating and identifying hearing loss so that makes her uniquely qualified to help you with your hearing health care.
Hearing Testing and Treatment
Coastal ENT Hearing Center provides comprehensive hearing evaluations to people of all ages, from newborns to seniors, because hearing loss can affect anyone at any age. At Coastal ENT hearing Center, our comprehensive diagnostic testing includes:

- Conditioned Play Audiometry(CPA)
- Pure tone Air and Bone Conduction testing
- Tinnitus Evaluations
If, after comprehensive testing, our test results indicate that you are a candidate for hearing aids, our audiologist will work individually with you to make the best recommendation for you. We go to great lengths to determine what hearing aid(s) is most appropriate for you depending on your needs, manual dexterity, activity level, budget and lifestyle. Each patient is unique and we work with you to determine what your needs are. Our services with amplification include:
- Personal consultation with the Audiologist
- Communication Needs Assessment
- Hearing Aid selection/fitting
- Hearing aid repairs and modifications
- Assitive Listening Devices
- Custom ear molds such as swim plugs, musician ear plugs, Hunter’s ear plugs, and custom noise protection
With the recent advances in hearing aid technology, devices vary greatly in style, features and capabilities. As with many products, the more advanced the technology, the more a hearing aid will cost. Our audiologist will help you determine which hearing aids and/or assistive listening devices are most appropriate for you.
