When To See An ENT For Ear Pain

Otolaryngologist is the medical term for an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. This type of specialist treats many conditions of the ear including hearing impairment, infections, disorders affecting balance, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and pain. Let’s learn more about when to see Coastal Ear, Nose & Throat for ear pain.

Some Typical Causes Of Ear Painman experiencing ear pain

Ear pain can have a number of causes. You can have ear pain from a build up of wax. Our ears continuously make ear wax which can lead to itching, pain, discharge, or an infection.

Air pressure can cause pain. This occurs on an airplane or in an elevator which is normally a temporary situation.

Swimmer’s ear is another cause of ear pain. In this instance, water gets trapped in the outer ear which can lead to an infection.

By far the most common cause of ear pain is infection.

Children are more frequently affected by ear pain and infections than adults.

Two Types Of Ear Infections

You can develop ear infections in the following ways:

  • An outer ear infection is easy to diagnose since they are apparent even to you. You may develop an itchy rash causing swelling, tenderness, and ultimately, pain.
  • Infections in the middle ear are due to fluid being trapped behind the eardrum causing the eardrum to bulge out resulting in ear pain. Known as otitis media, it is the most common cause of ear pain.

Another cause of ear pain is due to inflammation, not infection in the inner ear. Additional symptoms with this inflammation are vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and ear pain.

When To See An ENT For Ear Pain

While many causes of ear pain can be relieved by over-the-counter pain medications, this only reduces the pain. It does treat the infection or inflammation. If the pain returns, it may be time to see Coastal Ear, Nose & Throat in Savannah and Pooler, Georgia for ear pain.

Once diagnosed, treatment will be discussed.

If you develop a high fever, drowsiness, a stiff neck, or vomiting, don’t delay seeking medical care.
