What causes summer sinus infections? Well, many of the same causes of winter sinus infections. Sinus problems do not discriminate between the seasons. It is an inflammation for all seasons, and many factors can contribute to it. Let’s learn more.
Could It Be Summer Allergies?
It can be since you are outside a lot during the warmer months. You are breathing in pollen all the time, you play with your dog or children in the grass, and you can be in a smoky environment. All these triggers can lead to a sinus infection even though it’s summertime.
You can try wearing a mask when mowing the lawn. Be sure to keep windows closed in your car and at home to limit the amount of pollen you ingest.
Air Conditioning
During the hottest months of the year, you probably have your AC on continuously. That may make you feel cooler, but it also dries the air and your nasal passages. At the same time, summer heat and the drying air of AC leads to dehydration.
Stay hydrated by carrying around water and be sure to gulp some down periodically. The tiny hairs in the nose, known as cilia, will thank you for keeping them moist and free from bacteria that can cause a summer sinus infection.
Let’s stop here for a minute! If your sinus infection symptoms last for several months, it’s time to seek help from Coastal Ear, Nose & Throat for chronic sinusitis.
Swimming
Taking a dip in a pool, a lake, or the ocean is the summer sport. Unfortunately, the chlorine in pools can irritate and inflame the sinuses, or the bacteria found in other waters can trigger infection. This can include getting swimmer’s ear or water in the nose which especially affects children.
Flying
We all know how dry the air is in an airplane cabin. Bring saline nasal sprays and use periodically, and drink water throughout the flight.
