The Smart Sinus Procedure

The “smart sinus procedure” is the name given to an in-office balloon sinuplasty. It is a relatively new procedure with no cutting, no removal of bones, and it is performed under local anesthesia. As the name proclaims, you don’t have to be admitted to the hospital and can have it performed right in the doctor’s office. The purpose is to clear blocked sinuses and is usually recommended for those with chronic sinusitis.

It has been adapted from angioplasty, where balloon catheters dilate damaged or congested blood vessels near the heart.

Before The Procedure

Expect to stop all medications that can encourage bleeding during and after the procedure like NSAIDS, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Talk with Coastal Ear, Nose & Throat in Savannah and Pooler, GA about any prescription blood thinners you normally take.

Day Of The Procedure

Eat a normal breakfast or lunch and plan to have someone drive you home. Wear warm comfortable clothes. Expect to be at the office approximately an hour and a half.

During The Procedure

After anesthesia is administered, a tiny flashlight and camera will be inserted into the sinus cavity, and then a flexible balloon catheter will follow, and it will slowly be inflated to widen and expand the cavity. The cavities will then be flushed with a saline solution to remove any pus or mucus buildup to help reduce any future sinus infections.

This safely opens up all the pathways between the sinuses and nostrils which allows air to flow and your sinuses to drain better.

After The In-Office Balloon Sinuplasty

Expect that you will have quick recovery and be back to work and normal activities within one to two days. You should feel immediate relief from pain and pressure.

Expect some minimal bleeding and discomfort. Saline will be provided for you to rinse your nasal passages for several weeks, and you may be given antibiotics to prevent any infection.
